The Holy Trinity

The term “Holy Trinity” isn’t actually used in the bible. It refers to God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.  They are three different individuals.  God the Father is sometimes referred to as God Most High and Abba (Hebrew for father).  Jesus is sometimes called the Son, the Lord, and Christ.  The Holy Spirit is also called the Holy Ghost.  All three are without physical bodies because they are spirit.

When someone says, “God,” they could be talking about all three or any of the three.  This is because all three have the same nature, the same goals, and have power and authority over everything on earth and in the heavens.  We know they have the same nature because Jesus only does what God the Father wants Him to do.  Likewise, the Holy Spirit only does what Jesus wants Him to do.

God the Father

He is the most high God.  He is greater than Jesus.(1)

Jesus

Jesus is the only begotten son of God the Father.(2)  The things in the heavens and on earth, including the angels and people, were created through Jesus and for Jesus.(3)

People were originally made being very good.(4)  The devil then tricked people into rebelling against God.(5)  The penalty for sinning is death.(6)  This death penalty was passed down to all generations.(7)

We will all experience physical death.  This is considered the first death.  After we physically die, we will be judged.  We will go to hell or heaven.  If we go to hell, it’s considered the second death.(8)  Those who end up in heaven won’t experience the second death.

The Old Testament is the first half of the bible, which covers the time before Jesus came to earth as a human.  The O.T. was originally written in Hebrew.  The term “messiah” in the O.T. means “the anointed one.”

There are over three hundred prophecies in the O.T. of the coming messiah. (9)  (research the statistical probability of someone meeting the criteria of all the prophecies).

In the O.T. God the Father said he required blood for the atonement of our sins.  We were given rules, laws, and commandments to follow.  We were unable to keep them.  This revealed our natural sinful nature.  This showed us that we continuously need atonement for our sins.  God saw this and temporarily accepted animal blood for our atonement.  This was only a temporary atonement because animal blood only masked our sin, it didn’t fully remove it.  For a full atonement/redemption to be accepted by God the Father, only one person met all His requirements.

In the O.T. there was a continuous cycle that needs to be realized.  People would rely on God and were obedient to Him.  All was good while this happened.  People would then start thinking their wellbeing was a result of their own doings.  They would then drift away from obedience to God and start doing what was good in their own eyes.  This led to suffering.  They would ask God for forgiveness and want to become obedient to Him again.  God would forgive them and soon everything was good again.  This is seen repeatedly in the Book of Judges.  Currently, the United States of America is a good example of the falling away.  It’s just uncertain if there will be a repentance.

The New Testament is the second part of the bible and covers the time when Jesus came to earth as a human, was sacrificed, and went up to heaven.  The N.T. was originally written in Greek.  The term “christ” in the N.T. means “the anointed one.”

In the N.T., Jesus is the only person who fulfilled all the prophecies of the Anointed One/Messiah of the O.T.

In the O.T. an event occurred in which God was going to kill the firstborn of every household in Egypt.  God told the Jews that were in Egypt to mark their door frames with the blood of a lamb or goat.  This animal had to be a male without blemish.  When God sent the angel to go through Egypt and kill the firstborn of every household, it passed over households with the sacrificial lamb/goat blood on the door frame.  The Jews were spared.(10)  They were spared by God due to the blood sacrifice of the unblemished lamb/goat.  This event is known as Passover.  Passover is the O.T. precursor to the most important event in the entire bible.  You see, in the N.T. Jesus comes to earth in the form of a human to be the sacrificial lamb.(11).  This blemish free (sin free)  sacrifice was accepted by God the Father as our final sacrificial lamb.  God the Father’s justified wrath, that should have been put on us, was instead put on Jesus/the Lamb.  Jesus willingly took our place.  Animal sacrifices aren’t necessary anymore.  Until Jesus returns, His blood MAY allow us to return to God the Father’s good graces and go to heaven.  All we need to do is believe Jesus absorbed our punishment and give continuous effort to be obedient to His Word.(12)

Holy Spirit

Before Jesus left this world to go to heaven to be with God the Father, he told his concerned disciples that this is actually a good thing.  Because when He leaves, the Holy Spirit will come to them.(13)  Afterall, the Holy Spirit is who made Mary pregnant with Jesus.(14)  He’s the One who gave Jesus the ability and us the ability to demonstrate God’s power by doing things such as miracles, signs, wonders, casting out demons, and healing the sick.(15)  The Holy Spirit is the One who raised Jesus from the dead.(16)  And last, but not least...He’s the One who guided Jesus on His journeys and decisions.(17)  Jesus didn’t allow His decisions to be influenced by this world, but rather only from His Father through the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit allowed Jesus to live a sinless life that made Him acceptable to be received by God the Father as a final atonement for our sins!

The Holy Spirit was present at the creation of the heavens and the earth.(18)  When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit came down upon Him in the form of a dove.(19)  Afterwards, he started his hardcore ministry!

There are many spirits, but the Holy Spirit is the only Spirit with the full power of God the Father and Jesus.  God the Father guides believers the rest of the way to Jesus through the Holy Spirit.(20)  The Holy Spirit is our only vehicle back to Jesus and we know that Jesus is the only way back to God the Father.

Jesus is the one who decides whether to give us the Holy Spirit.  Jesus said if a person loves Him, he will be obedient to His Word.  When Jesus sees this love (obedience), He will ask God the Father to send the Holy Spirit to that person.(12)

The Holy Spirit wants to glorify Jesus.(21)  Before Jesus left this world, he told his disciples to preach the gospel, but that wasn’t all.  He also told them to cast out demons, heal the sick, etc.  If we don’t do these things, we are not being obedient and are hindering the Holy Spirit.  If we are obedient and demonstrate the power of God, we prove that the Word is true.(22)  Want to save souls?  Then be obedient and PROVE that the Word is true!

A modern disciple, like disciples of the past, are led by the Holy Spirit, obedient to the Word, and walk-out the full gospel - casting out demons, healing the sick, etc.

The Word

The Word and Jesus are so intertwined that they are one and the same.(23)  The bible was written by men, but the words were given to those men by the Holy Spirit...and we know that the Holy Spirit only announces what Jesus tells Him to announce.  When we know the Word, we know Jesus’ nature and his commandments/laws/desires for us.  When we DO the Word, the Holy Spirit will move into us and guide us the rest of the way to JESUS and salvation.  The Holy Spirit will reveal the Word’s deeper meanings to us.(24)  When the Word rules our life, Jesus rules our life.  Only by DOING what Jesus says can we rightfully call Him our “Lord.”
