Soul Ties

Part 1 - What is a soul tie?

Our soul is made up of our mind, will, and emotions.  When our soul connects closely with another person’s soul, we can develop a “soul tie.”  This means our souls have become tightly knit together.

What exactly does that mean?  When we have a soul tie with someone, we have a special bond with that person.  We “connect” with them.  It may allow us to understand that person exceptionally well.  We may feel their feelings at times.  There are numerous ways the soul tie can reveal itself.

Part 2 - Godly soul ties

There are godly soul ties and ungodly soul ties.  Godly soul ties build both people up in a way that’s pleasing to God.  These soul ties do NOT lead to control of one over the other.  It’s positive and both people benefit.  It allows increased empathy between the two people.  These soul ties can be between any two people or even a group of people.

There was a soul tie between the father, Jacob, and son, Benjamin.  This can be seen when Joseph mentioned that he wanted to keep Benjamin as a slave.  Benjamin’s older brother said if he returned to Jacob without Benjamin, Jacob would die from grief.

Genesis 44:30

And now when I come to your servant, my father, and the youth is not with us and his soul being bound to his soul, it will be when he sees that the youth is not, he will die.  And your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father to the grave in sorrow.

There was a soul tie between friends, Jonathan and David.  Jonathan was able to help David avoid his father, King Saul’s, murderous wrath.

1 Samuel 18:1-5

And it happened, when he finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David; and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.  And Saul took him that day, and would not let him return to his father’s house.  And Jonathan and David cut a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.  And Jonathan stripped off the robe that was on him and gave it to David; also his apparel, even to his sword and to his bow and to his belt.  And David went out wherever Saul sent him.  And he acted wisely.  And Saul set him over the men of war.  And it was good in the eyes of all the people, and also in the eyes of the servants of Saul.

At the onset of the church, there was a soul tie amongst the believers.

Acts 4:31-35

And they having petitioned, the place in which they were gathered was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the Word of God with boldness.  And of the multitude of the ones who believing, the heart and the soul were one.  And no one said any of the possessions belonging to him to be his own, but all things were common to them.  And with great power the apostles gave testimony of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.  For neither was anyone needy among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses, selling them, they brought the value of the things being sold, and laid them at the feet of the apostles.  And it was distributed to each one according as any had need.

Part 3 - Ungodly soul ties

For every good thing God gives us, the devil likes to make a counterfeit.  This includes soul ties.  Ungodly soul ties are not pleasing to God.  They open the door for demonic influence in our lives.

A soul tie is like a spiritual bridge between two people.  In an ungodly soul tie, demons can use that spiritual bridge to go back and forth between two people.  In other words, if we have an ungodly soul tie with someone, their demons can move into us!  This spiritual bridge remains until it is broken.  We must break these bridges.

...through sexual sin

One of the most common ways to develop an ungodly soul tie is through fornication, which includes sexual relations outside of marriage and adultery.  The demons tormenting the people we fornicated with may have a legal right to torment us too.  This could be considered a curse that comes with fornicating.  Imagine having an adulterous relationship with a prostitute?  Can you imagine the number of demons that may now have the right to torment us?

1 Corinthians 6:15-16

Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?  Then taking the members of Christ, shall I make them members of a prostitute?  Let it not be!  Or do you not know that he being joined to a prostitute is one body?  For He says, “The two shall be into one flesh.

     The above is referencing below.

Genesis 2:24

Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife and they shall become one flesh.

Knowing the above, it is obvious how a married couple who breaks all their ungodly soul ties and routinely go through deliverance can get deeply cleaned out and have a blessed marriage.

One more thing...mentally fixating and lusting on someone can develop a soul tie with that person, without even meeting them.

Matthew 5:28

But I say to you, Everyone looking at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

...through soul domination

If in a close relationship one person dominates over the other, an ungodly soul tie can be developed.  This may be between a parent and child, spouses, siblings, boss and employee, pastor and congregants, friends, etc.  Not only can demons be exchanged, but the dominating person can infuse the other person with new demons.  For example, when married to a tyrant it’s easy to see how the submissive spouse can get infested with demons of anger, frustration, hatred, resentment, murder, divorce, animosity, bitterness, and unforgiveness.

These dominating relationships aren’t always obvious to the submissive person in the relationship, but can often be seen by others.  If trying to determine whether an ungodly soul tie may exist, look at the amount of control one person may have over the other.  This does not excuse wives from being submissive towards their husbands...we’re talking tyrants here.  There are good things to be said about those in leadership roles who lead rather than dictate.

Remember, our total submission only goes towards God.  The Word/Jesus and the Holy Spirit are our guides.  They are our final say on EVERYTHING.  Don’t let a parent, spouse, friend, institutionalized church, denomination, pastor, priest, or pope become an idol.  If we do, it may open up a soul tie that will promote worldly influences.  Always be vigilant with eyes wide open.

Colossians 2:8

Watch that there will not be one abducting you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ.

...through an object

We may possess something belonging to someone we have an ungodly soul tie with.  It may even be a gift from them.  In order to break that soul tie we may have to get rid of that object.  If it isn’t evil by itself, we can sell it or give it away.  If it is possibly demonic, throw it away.

Part 4 - Breaking ungodly soul ties

  1. Repent for all sexual relationships outside of marriage and for all adulterous relationships during marriage.

  2. Repent for allowing someone to dominate over us in a way that may have opened us up to demonic influence (negative emotions).

  3. Repent for the feelings we accepted and negative actions that resulted from those soul ties.

  4. In the name of Jesus, break all soul ties.

  5. Cast out the demons.
